Variable programming of non-volatile memory

Systems and methods in accordance with various embodiments can provide for reduced program disturb in non-volatile semiconductor memory. In one embodiment, select memory cells such as those connected to a last word line of a NAND string are programmed using one or more program verify levels or voltages that are different than a corresponding level used to program other cells or word lines. One exemplary embodiment includes using a lower threshold voltage verify level for select physical states when programming the last word line to be programmed for a string during a program operation. Another embodiment includes applying a lower program voltage to program memory cells of the last word line to select physical states. Additional read levels are established for reading the states programmed using lower verify levels in some exemplary implementations. A second program voltage step size that is larger than a nominal step size is used in one embodiment when programming select memory cells or word lines, such as the last word line to be programmed for a NAND string.

Method and apparatus for synchronizing playback of streaming media in multiple output devices

ActiveUS20060149850A1Maintaining average timing synchronizationError preventionTransmission systemsStreaming dataTimestamp
A method and apparatus for synchronizing streaming media with multiple output devices. One or more media servers serve media streams to one or more output devices (i.e., players). For playback synchronization, one output device is the “master”, whereas the remaining output devices are “slaves”. More data is requested from the media server by the “master” device to maintain a nominal buffer fill level over time. The “slave” devices receive streamed data from the media server at the rate determined by the master device's data requests, and the average rate of data flow over the streaming network is thus controlled by the frequency of the single “master” device's crystal. “Slave” devices make playback rate corrections to maintain respective buffer fill levels within upper and lower threshold levels. For slow networks, each media data packet timestamp is calculated from the time the master's buffer reaches nominal level.

Programming method to reduce gate coupling interference for non-volatile memory

A non-volatile memory device and programming process is described that compensates for coupling effects on threshold gate voltages of adjacent floating gate or non-conductive floating node memory cells by adjusting the threshold voltage level programmed in view of the data being programmed on a following programming cycle into adjacent memory cells, so that the coupling effect results in the desired target threshold voltages for the cells. In one embodiment of the present invention, memory cell coupling is compensated for by adjusting programming level of one or more memory cells of a first page a memory array to a higher or lower threshold verify target voltage given the data / programming level to be written to directly adjacent memory cells of a second page, so that coupling between the directly adjacent memory cells of the first and second pages brings the memory cells of first page to their final target programming level.

Pulse oximeter

The invention relates to pulsed oximeters used to measure blood oxygenation. The current trend towards mobile oximeters has brought the problem of how to minimize power consumption without compromising on the performance of the device. To tackle this problem, the present invention provides a method for controlling optical power in a pulse oximeter. The signal-to-noise ratio of the received baseband signal is monitored, and the duty cycle of the driving pulses is controlled in dependence on the monitored signal-to-noise ratio, preferably so that the optical power is minimized within the confines of a predetermined lower threshold set for the signal-to-noise ratio. In this way the optical power is made dependent on the perfusion level of the subject, whereby the power can be controlled to a level which does not exceed that needed for the subject.

Method and apparatus for prefetching recursive data structures

Computer systems are typically designed with multiple levels of memory hierarchy. Prefetching has been employed to overcome the latency of fetching data or instructions from or to memory. Prefetching works well for data structures with regular memory access patterns, but less so for data structures such as trees, hash tables, and other structures in which the datum that will be used is not known a priori. The present invention significantly increases the cache hit rates of many important data structure traversals, and thereby the potential throughput of the computer system and application in which it is employed. The invention is applicable to those data structure accesses in which the traversal path is dynamically determined. The invention does this by aggregating traversal requests and then pipelining the traversal of aggregated requests on the data structure. Once enough traversal requests have been accumulated so that most of the memory latency can be hidden by prefetching the accumulated requests, the data structure is traversed by performing software pipelining on some or all of the accumulated requests. As requests are completed and retired from the set of requests that are being traversed, additional accumulated requests are added to that set. This process is repeated until either an upper threshold of processed requests or a lower threshold of residual accumulated requests has been reached. At that point, the traversal results may be processed.

System for power savings in server farms

A threshold-based approach is used to assign tasks to servers in a server farm. A “number of connections” count or “connection rate” is maintained for an active server and when the count achieves a first value a wake up signal is sent to a next (inactive) server to alert the inactive server to become active and periodic keep alive signals are initiated. When the number of connections next reaches a second, higher value, subsequent requests for connections are sent to the newly active server. Variations of this approach allow for servers and their associated processes and devices to be handled in clusters for power management scaling efficiency. Servers can be placed in the inactive mode when the number of connections reaches a lower threshold. Other criteria can be used to determine activation of servers, processors or other devices or processes. Other types of resource use monitoring can also be used with this invention.

Energy efficient and fast charge modes of a rechargeable battery

A method of providing power to an electronic device in an energy-efficient manner includes transitioning between power states corresponding to charging and discharging a battery. The state of charge of the battery is detected. Upon detecting a high threshold state of charge, an external power source such as an AC-to-DC adapter is disabled, and the battery to provides primary power to the electronic device. Upon a low threshold state of charge, the AC-to-DC adapter is controlled to provide a high current output to charge the battery and provide primary power to the electronic device. The power states, when cycled over time based on the state of the battery, provide for an energy-efficient method of powering the electronic device.

System performance in a data network through queue management based on ingress rate monitoring

A method optimizes performance in a data network including a plurality of ingress ports and output queues. Ingress rates of a plurality of flows are monitored, where each flow includes a sequence of packets passing from an ingress port to an output queue and each flow has a profile related to flow characteristics. Each packet is marked with a marking based on criteria including the ingress flow rate and the flow profile. A drop probability of each packet is adjusted at an output queue according to a value of a drop function taken as a function of a queue size. The drop function is selected according to the marking on the packet. The drop functions are zero for queue sizes less than a lower threshold range and positive for queue sizes greater than the lower threshold range. By selecting drop functions according to ingress flow rate measurements and flow profiles, the data network can be optimized for overall system performance.

Computer communication providing quality of service

A method is provided for more efficiently transmitting data from a server computer to a client computer over a communications network, the nodes of which are capable of providing two classes of transmission quality. Data is transmitted using the high priority class until a local cache at the client computer is filled to a certain upper threshold, at which point the data is transmitted using the low priority class. If the local cache at the client computer subsequently reaches a lower threshold then the transmitted reverts to the use of the high priority class. The communications network may be connection-based (e.g. ATM) or connection-less (e.g. the Internet).

Adapting receiver thresholds to improve rate-based flow control

A technique for adapting receiver thresholds to improve rate-based flow control in a data communications network. With this invention, the flow control process becomes self-calibrating such that threshold values are dynamically adjusted to adapt to current network conditions, without requiring user intervention. Several different indicators of network conditions are monitored, and appropriate adjustments are made to the threshold(s) upon detecting these specific indicators. One monitor enables the threshold to increase when the network is uncongested, enabling the sender to increase its transmission rate. Conversely, the threshold is lowered if the network is congested, so that the transmission rate will be decreased. Another monitor balances bandwidth allocation among connections sharing a bottleneck resource, by lowering the threshold (and therefore decreasing the send rate) when a connection uses a high share of the resource. A third monitor detects the presence of traffic from protocols not using adaptive receiver thresholds, and adjusts the threshold (including an upper and lower threshold bound) in order to compete fairly for resources with these other protocols. The monitors may be implemented individually or in combination.

Flexible 3-D Photonic Device

Three-dimensional flexible photonic integrated circuits on silicon are fabricated in semiconductor wafer form and then transferred to Silicon-on-Polymer (SOP) substrates. SOP provides flexibility for conformal mounting with devices capable of maintaining performance when dynamically deformed to allow routing of light in x, y and z directions. Bonding a wafer or individual die of III-V semiconductor, such as Gallium Arsenide or similar photonic material, to the flexible silicon creates an active region for lasers, amplifiers, modulators, and other photonic devices using standard processing. Mounting additional photonic devices to the opposite side of a flexible photonic waveguide produces a stack for three-dimensional devices. Multiple flexible photonic waveguides may be stacked to increase functionality by transferring light between stacked waveguides. The flexible photonic circuit allows for integration of photonic devices such as low threshold lasers, tunable lasers, and other photonic integrated circuits with flexible Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuits.
