Embodiment Construction

[0028] for Figure 1A , certain anatomical structures including heart 12 of patient 14 having right atrium 16 , left atrium 18 , right ventricle 20 and left ventricle 22 are shown for illustrative purposes. Blood from the right subclavian vein 24 and left subclavian vein 26 and the right jugular vein 28 and left jugular vein 30 enters the right atrium 16 through the superior vena cava 32 , while blood from the lower body enters the right atrium 16 through the inferior vena cava 34 . Blood is pumped from the right atrium 16 to the right ventricle 20 and to the lungs (not shown) to be oxidized. Blood returning from the lungs enters the left atrium 18 through the pulmonary veins 36 and is pumped into the left ventricle 22 . Blood leaving the left ventricle 22 enters the aorta 38 and flows into the left subclavian artery 40 , the left common carotid artery 42 , and the brachiocephalic arteries 44 including the right subclavian artery 46 and the right common carotid artery 48 .

Abstract

A system for facilitating fluid connection between a cannula and a blood pump. The system includes a cannula (52) having a distal end (66) adapted for fluid communication with the circulatory system and a proximal end (68) configured to be coupled to an inlet (82) of a blood pump (54). Also included is a tunneling device (84) configured to be inserted into a patient to guide the proximal end (56) of the cannula (50) adjacent the inlet (82) and including a connecting structure (90). Also included is a plug (224) having a first plug portion (230) and a second plug portion (232). The first plug portion (230) includes a connecting structure (92) that is selectively engageable. Second plug portion (232) is configured to be inserted into the proximal end of cannula (50). First and second plug portions (230, 232) are selectively disengageable to allow in-situ disconnection between cannula (50) and tunneling device (84).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to blood pumps and auxiliary devices for connecting a blood pump to an associated cannula. Background technique [0002] The human heart is the muscle responsible for pumping blood throughout a network of blood vessels. Veins are blood vessels that carry blood to the heart, while arteries carry blood away from the heart. The human heart consists of two atria and two ventricles. The atria receive blood from the body, and the ventricles, which consist of larger muscular walls, pump blood from the heart. The diaphragm separates the left and right sides of the heart. The movement of blood is as follows: Blood enters the right atrium from the superior or inferior vena cava and moves into the right ventricle. Blood is pumped from the right ventricle to the lungs via the pulmonary artery, where it is oxygenated. Once the blood has been oxygenated, it returns to the heart by entering the left atrium, through the pul...
