[0229] Step 1 - Synthesis of ZDOL perfluorobutanesulfonate

[0230] 154g perfluoro-1-butanesulfonyl fluoride (CF 3 CF 2 CF 2 CF 2 SO 2 F - 96%, 489 mmol) and 54 g of triethylamine (TEA - 534 mmol) were placed in a 1000 ml round bottom flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, dropping funnel, thermometer and condenser. After the temperature has cooled down, add 175 g via the dropping funnel in about 2 hours ZDOLPFPE (EW=431, 406 meq) while keeping the reaction mixture under stirring and at -15°C / -20°C. After the addition was complete, the cooling bath was removed and the reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature. 19 F-NMR shows ZDOL PFPE was quantitatively converted to the corresponding perfluorobutanesulfonate derivatives.

[0231] To this mixture was then added 100 g of D100 (1:1 mixture by weight of perfluoropropyltetrahydropyran and perfluorobutyltetrahydrofuran), 76 g methanol and shake vigorously.

[0232] After phase separation, the lower o...

Abstract

The present invention relates to novel (per)fluoropolyether polymers and their use as lubricants, in particular for Magnetic Recording Media (MRM).

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority from European Application No. 15175979.2 filed on 09.07.2015, the entire content of which application is hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to novel (per)fluoropolyether polymers and their use as lubricants, especially for magnetic recording media (MRM). Background technique [0004] Thin-film magnetic recording media (MRM), such as hard disks, are used to store large amounts of data and are typically composed of multiple layers, including a non-magnetic substrate on each side of which is sequentially deposited an underlying layer and at least a magnetic layer. A carbon overcoat is typically deposited on the magnetic recording layer to protect the recording layer from abrasion and environmental corrosion. [0005] A thin layer of lubricant is applied over the protective carbon overcoat to improve the tribological p...
