Embodiment Construction

[0020] As discussed below, the present invention provides a technique for allowing a user of a mobile device (eg, a smartphone) to control another device (eg, a video game console) by simply moving the mobile device. The unique feature of this invention is that it can use existing hardware while achieving high accuracy and ease of use. Specifically, the controlled device (eg, game console, VR / AR headset, smart appliance) is equipped with multiple speakers. The speaker emits the sound received by the mobile device. Using a new frequency-modulated continuous waveform (FMCW) method based on the received sound and exploiting the Doppler shift of the audio signal, the movement of a mobile device can be tracked.

[0021] The Doppler effect is a known phenomenon in which the frequency of a signal changes as the sender or receiver moves. By tracking the frequency shift, the moving speed can be estimated, and based on the speed, the distance between the mobile device and the device t...

Abstract

A method, system and computer program product for tracking a mobile device. A reference position of the mobile device and a frequency offset between the mobile device and another device are estimated.Samples are then fetched at various frequencies from the receivers. The fetched signals are mixed with a pseudo transmitted signal. A relative distance between the mobile device and the other deviceis computed based on a change in frequency of the mixed signal at a current location, a velocity of the mobile device and the estimated frequency offset. An absolute distance between the mobile deviceand the other device is determined using the reference position and the computed relative distance. A location of the mobile device is then determined based on the mobile device's velocity and the determined absolute difference.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application requests 62 / 263,411 titled "ACCURATELY TRACKING A MOBILE DEVICE TO EFFECTIVELY ENABLE MOBILE DEVICE TO CONTROL ANOTHER DEVICE" filed on December 4, 2015 priority of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. , the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to mobile devices and, in particular, to precisely tracking a mobile device (e.g., smart phone, smart watch) to effectively control another device (e.g., game console, virtual reality / augmented reality device) through the mobile device , smart appliances, smart TV). Background technique [0004] Users are currently demanding new ways to interact and control devices such as video game consoles, virtual reality (VR) / augmented reality (AR) devices, and smart appliances. For example, interactive video games (ie, games played by doing actions) are becoming increasingly pop...
