Embodiment Construction

[0039] Referring to FIG. 1 , there is shown a schematic diagram of a conventional 3D printing apparatus 10 known in the art. The device 10 comprises a substrate 12 with an operating surface 14 on which a printed object is to be produced by 3D printing.

[0040] Apparatus 10 also includes a supply hopper 16 that deposits a monolayer of powder 18 onto operating surface 14 .

[0041] An energy gun 20 , typically a laser or electron gun, fires an energy beam 22 onto the powder layer 18 , causing the powder layer 18 to selectively melt or sinter to form the individual layers of the 3D object. This process is repeated to add additional layers and build the object incrementally until it is complete.

[0042] refer to figure 2 , which shows a schematic diagram of the 3D printing method and device 24 according to the first embodiment of the present invention.

[0043] The apparatus 24 includes an operating surface 26, an energy source 28 for emitting at least one energy beam 30 onto...

Abstract

A printing apparatus for printing a three-dimensional object, comprising an operative surface, an energy source for emitting at least one energy beam onto the operative surface and at least one supplyhopper for dispensing powder onto the operative surface, wherein the powder is adapted to be melted by the energy beam. The supply hopper is configured such that powder being dispensed by the supplyhopper has an airborne density when travelling from the supply hopper to the operative surface, and wherein the density provides that the powder is not melted by the energy beam when the powder is travelling to the operative surface.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a 3D printing method and device. [0002] More specifically, the present invention relates to a 3D printing method and apparatus suitable for high-speed manufacture of objects. Background technique [0003] 3D printed parts, manufactured by laying down successive thin layers of material from a three-dimensional (3D) digital image, create physical objects. [0004] Typically, these 3D printed parts can be manufactured in a number of ways, such as selective laser melting or sintering, which operate through a powder bed on which a beam of energy is projected to melt the top layer of the powder bed and cause it to fuse to the substrate or base plate. This melting process is repeated to add additional layers to the base plate to incrementally build up the part until it is fully fabricated. [0005] These printing methods are time-consuming to perform and can take days or weeks to manufacture objects of reasonable size. This prob...
