Embodiment Construction

[0043] The following is a description of example embodiments of the invention.

[0044] The teachings of all patents, published applications, and references cited herein are incorporated by reference in their entirety.

[0045] Figure 1A An example embodiment of a circular waveguide polarizer 100 constructed and arranged in accordance with the described embodiments is shown. The example device 100 includes a first circular waveguide 102 configured to achieve 3λ between two orthogonal linearly polarized signals transmitted into the first circular waveguide 102 at a first polarization orientation. / 8 relative phase shift.

[0046] As used herein, the "polarization orientation" of a signal refers to the angular orientation of the electric field vector of the transmitted signal relative to a reference frame. Figure 1B is an example of such a coordinate system. Figure 1B A cross-sectional view of a circular waveguide (e.g., first circular waveguide 102) is shown, wherein the ...

Abstract

A waveguide device comprises a first circular waveguide segment (CWS) that imparts a 3[lambda] / 8 relative phase shift to two orthogonal linearly polarized signals, and a second CWS that imparts a [lambda] / 8 relative phase shift to two orthogonal linearly polarized signals. A waveguide assembly (WGA) comprises the first CWS disposed coaxially adjacent to the second CWS. A source may provide dual linear polarized energy into the WGA. In a first mode, the first CWS is axially orientated relative to the second CWS, such that the first CWS polarization is offset by 90 degrees with respect to the second CWS polarization. The radiation source polarization may be offset by 45 degrees relative to the first CWS polarization and the second CWS polarization. In a second mode, the first CWS may be orientated with respect to the second CWS, such that the first CWS polarization and the second CWS polarization are substantially the same.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application is a continuation of US Application No. 15 / 606,130 filed May 26, 2017. The entire teaching of the above application is hereby incorporated by reference. Background technique [0003] Satellite communication systems communicate information between satellites in Earth orbit and ground-based transceiver stations by propagating electromagnetic energy over wireless radio links. An important component in any radio link communication system is the antenna. An antenna is a component that converts electromagnetic waves propagating on a transmission line into electromagnetic waves propagating in free space (transmission) or converts electromagnetic waves propagating in free space into electromagnetic waves propagating on a transmission line (reception). [0004] Polarization is an important characteristic of propagating electromagnetic waves. Polarization describes the motion toward which the electric field vector of an electromagn...
