Abstract

The present invention provides a method and a system for learning contributions to an engine knock background noise level. The methods and the systems for operating an engine are disclosed. The enginecomprises a knock control system that may determine contributions of individual noise sources to an engine background noise level. The contributions of the individual noise sources may be the basis for establishing the presence or absence of knock in one or more engine cylinders.

Background technique [0002] The output of the vibration sensor may be the basis for establishing whether engine knock is present. Engine knock can be produced by igniting gases in the cylinder before the flame front created by the spark plug reaches the gases. After initiating combustion in a cylinder during a cycle of the cylinder, the gases may ignite as pressure and temperature in the cylinder increase. High-frequency pressure oscillations within the cylinders can create an engine knock sound that can be picked up by vibration sensors. Engine knock can cause deterioration within the cylinders.
