Embodiment Construction

[0017] The object of the present invention is a technique for handling stored data as Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) tones in a wireless communication device. Although described herein with reference to cellular telephones, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the present invention is applicable to other forms of communication, such as personal communication systems (PCS), mobile radio telephones, mobile radios, and the like.

[0018] Those skilled in the art will appreciate that conventional cellular telephone or PCS devices operate on multiple channels. The user can manually input the destination phone number or retrieve the pre-stored destination phone number. Over the traffic channel, the destination telephone number is sent along with other identifying data such as Mobile Identification Number (MIN) and Electronic Serial Number (ESN).

[0019] Wireless communication devices utilize messages on traffic channels to actually transmit voice and / or other data, such...

Abstract

The data storage area allows a user of the wireless communication device to input data to be processed and transmitted as a series of dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) tones. The wireless communication device sends a call origination on a traffic channel and may send DTMF tones on the traffic channel. A user may enter data (202) into the storage area and an indication that the entered data should be processed as DTMF tones (210). The data input as DTMF tones is processed and sent (226) as a series of DTMF tones on the traffic channel. The data storage area may have a predetermined location, wherein data stored at the predetermined location is handled as DTMF tones. Alternatively, a data flag or other indicator may be associated with the data to indicate processing as DTMF tones.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to wireless communication systems, and more particularly, to systems and methods for using dual tone multi-frequency signals in wireless communication systems. Background technique [0002] Wireless communication devices, such as cellular telephones, are widely used to replace traditional telephone systems. In addition to functioning as a replacement for traditional telephones, wireless communication devices offer the advantage of portability, thereby enabling a user to establish a wireless communication link between any two locations on the globe. [0003] In addition to traditional voice communications, wireless communication devices also provide features such as voicemail, voice messaging, and automatic callback notifications. Callback notifications allow a caller to automatically send his phone number to simplify the process of returning a call. For example, a user of a wireless telephone may set up a call ...
