Embodiment Construction

[0015] Referring now to Figure 1, there is shown a collar 2 for joining two elongate lengths of material. The collar 2 is a one-piece construction made of a hard plastic material. The collar 2 may suitably be made of metal such as aluminium, which has the added advantage of being heat resistant and relatively light in weight.

[0016] The collar 2 has two mutually opposing surfaces 4, 6, each supporting one of the elongated lengths of material in use (see Figures 2 and 3). The first surface 4 is convex around a first axis A-A, while the second surface 6 is convex around a second axis B-B, which is perpendicular to the first axis. Although the collar 2 is shown in Figure 1 as a unitary structure, it is also possible that the two surfaces 4, 6 are separate parts joined together.

[0017] The first surface has a cylindrical channel 14 extending through the center of the collar 2 from a first point on the surface 4 to a second point on the surface 4 along the axis B-B. The seco...

Abstract

A thimble (2) providing a first convex surface (4) about a first axis and a second convex surface (6) about a second axis, the first and second axes being substantially perpendicular to each other and the first and second surfaces (4, 6) being opposite each other, the thimble (2) being such that a first length of elongate material (20) can be wrapped over said first convex surface (4) and back on itself to form a first loop around the thimble (2) and a second length of elongate material (22) can then be wrapped over said second convex surface (6) through said first loop and back on itself to form a second loop around the thimble (2).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a thimble for connecting a first elongated length of material to a second elongated length of material. Background technique [0002] Where it is necessary to join two lengths of material together, usually the point where the two lengths join is the point of weakness. This is due to a number of reasons such as friction between the materials and the small radii of the materials at their connection points. This will limit the strength of the connection. [0003] A loop is a commonly known device used in boat ropes as a means of forming a loop on a length of rope or other material. A basic collar can be in the form of a metal ring with a concave outer surface around which the cord can be attached. This will provide a loop on the rope that is durable and reduces wear and tear on the rope. Contents of the invention [0004] According to the present invention there is provided a collar having a first convex surface abou...
