Abstract

Methods for the treatment of short bowel syndrome in patients in need thereof are provided, comprising the administration to the patients of an effective amount of a formulation comprising arachidonic acid and docosahexanoic acid.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to methods of treating patients with short bowel syndrome, and formulations comprising long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for use in such methods. Background of the invention [0002] Short bowel syndrome generally refers to the state of malabsorption of nutrients after extensive surgical resection of the small intestine (Vanderhoof, J.A., Gastroenterology 113(5):1767-78(1997)). The degree of malabsorption depends not only on the amount of resected absorbing tissue in the small intestine, but also on the specific resected site of the small intestine. For example, resection of the distal ileum produces greater side effects than resection of the proximal bowel because resection of the ileocecal valve allows freer communication between the residual small and large bowel. Although loss of the microenvironment had no apparent effect on the ability of the lower gastrointestinal (GI) microf...
