A device for decoding video data includes a memory and processing circuitry. The processing circuitry may be configured to determine a prediction block for a current block of the video data and determine a subsampled prediction block based on the prediction block. The processing circuitry may be further configured to apply a decoder-side intra mode derivation process to the subsampled prediction block to determine an equivalent intra mode for the current block. A method of configuring candidate intra modes and a video decoding apparatus are disclosed. At least one embodiment of the present disclosure provides a method of configuring candidate intra modes for a chroma block, including determining whether a luma region corresponding to the chroma block has an encoding mode that is available for use, setting a direct mode (DM) among the candidate intra modes as a default mode when the encoding mode of the luma region is not available, and configuring the candidate intra modes by including the DM.

A method for using template based intra mode derivation (TIMD) with adaptive reference line selection is provided. A video coder generates a prediction of a template region neighboring the current block for each candidate intra mode in a set of candidate intra modes. Different sets of reference samples from different reference lines may be used for generating predictions for different candidate intra modes and / or different template regions. The video coder computes a difference value between reconstruction samples of the template region and the generated prediction of the template region for each candidate intra mode. The video coder derives an intra mode based on the computed difference values for the set of candidate intra modes. A method and apparatus for video coding by storing HoG of the current block for use by one or more subsequent blocks are disclosed. According to the method, input data associated with a current block is received, wherein the input data comprise pixel data to be encoded at an encoder side or data associated with the current block to be decoded at a decoder side. A HoG (Histogram of Gradients) associated with the current block is determined. The HoG is stored in a buffer. A subsequent block of the current block is encoded or decoded by using information comprising the HoG.

Systems, methods, and tools related to intra block copy (IBC) transform selection using directional intra mode derivation (DIMD) are disclosed herein. In an example, a video decoding or encoding device may obtain an intra block copy (IBC) residual block. The decoder or encoder may obtain an intra prediction mode associated with the IBC residual block. The intra prediction mode may be derived from directional intra mode derivation (DIMD). The intra prediction may be used to rotate the IBC residual block or reverse a rotation process of the IBC residual block.

According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, a method by which a decoding device decodes an image is provided. The method comprises the steps of: acquiring image information from a bit-stream; determining whether at least one from among a template-based inter mode derivation (TIMD) mode and decoder-side intra mode derivation (DIMD) mode is applied to the current block; generating a prediction sample of the current block on the basis of the at least one from among the TIMD mode and DIMD mode; and generating a reconstructed sample of the current block on the basis of the prediction sample of the current block, wherein the TIMD mode is derived from a template of the current block and the DIMD mode is derived on the basis of the gradient of adjacent reference samples of the current block.

Intra prediction modes are derived in video encoders and decoders using one of several embodiments. In at least one embodiment, an intra prediction mode is derived when little or no spatial information is available. In another embodiment, motion information is extracted and a corresponding block is obtained from a displaced collocated block which is used to determine an intra prediction mode for encoding / decoding a video block or sub-block. In another embodiment, a global motion model is computed at an encoder and sent in a slice header or a picture header to a corresponding decoder. Systems, methods, and apparatus are disclosed for encoding and decoding in a decoder-side intra mode derivation (DIMD) merge mode. An example device may determine a first reference sample associated with a first gradient histogram and a second reference sample associated with a second gradient histogram. The apparatus may scale the first gradient histogram based on a distance between the first reference sample and a current block, and scale the second gradient histogram based on a distance between the second reference sample and the current block. The apparatus may derive a combined gradient histogram based on the scaled first and second gradient histograms, and derive an intra prediction mode based on the combined gradient histogram. The apparatus may obtain a prediction of the current block based on the intra prediction mode, and decode the current block based on the prediction.

A video coding method using decoder-side intra mode derivation (DIMD) based on multiple histograms of gradients (HoGs) is provided. A video coder receives data to be encoded or decoded as a current block of a current picture of a video. The video coder derives a plurality of HoGs for different intra prediction angles. Different HoGs are derived based on different sets of reconstructed pixels neighboring the current block. The video coder selects a HoG from the plurality of HoGs. The video coder identifies one or more intra prediction modes based on the selected HoG. The video coder generates an intra-prediction of the current block based on the identified one or more intra prediction modes. The video coder encodes or decodes the current block by using the generated intra-prediction.

A method of decoding video data is provided. A video coder receives data to be encoded or decoded as a current block of pixels of a current picture of a video. The video coder identifies a reference block. The reference block may be indicated by a block vector associated with the current block. The video coder derives an intra prediction mode based on the identified reference block. The video coder generates a first predictor of the current block based on the derived intra prediction mode. The video coder generates a combined prediction of the current block based on the first predictor and a second predictor. The video coder encodes or decodes the current block by using the combined prediction.

An example method of video coding includes receiving a video bitstream including a plurality of blocks; receiving a video bitstream that includes a current picture, the current picture including a plurality of blocks that includes a current block. The method includes constructing an intra prediction mode table by adding an entry corresponding to an intra prediction mode to the intra prediction mode table based on one or more intra prediction modes used by one or more previously decoded blocks; and deriving an intra mode prediction list for the current block by selecting one or more entries from the constructed intra prediction mode table. Methods, apparatuses, and non-transitory computer-readable storage mediums are provided for video coding. In one method, a decoder obtains a first signaled flag that indicates whether a template-based intra mode derivation (TIMD) mode is applied on a current video block; and in response to determining that the TIMD mode is applied on the current video block based on the first signaled flag, the decoder obtains a second signaled flag in transform block (TB), coding block (CB), slice, picture, or sequence level that indicates whether signaling of an index of a template for TIMD is enabled, where the index of the template is signaled to derive the intra prediction mode for the current video block.

Systems, methods, and instrumentalities are disclosed for video encoding / decoding for decoder-side intra mode derivation (DIMD) merge mode and / or template filtering mode. In an example, a device, such as a video decoder, may determine a block-enabled DIMD merge mode. Based on the determination that the DIMD merge mode is enabled, the device may infer that the template filtering mode is disabled. The device may decode the block based on the DIMD merge mode. In an example, a device, such as a video encoder, may determine that a block is associated with a DIMD merge mode. Based on a determination that the block is associated with the DIMD merge mode, the device may disable the template filtering mode. The device may encode the current block based on the DIMD merge mode.

A method of describing a respective sample-derived decoder-side intra mode derivation (DIMD) predictor for a coding unit (CU) of a picture is described. The method includes selecting one or more intra prediction modes (IPMs) in a template block neighboring the CU, determining blending weights for blending at least the one or more selected IPMs, and generating the DIMD predictor by blending the one or more selected IPMs using the blending weights determined for the CU such that the blending varies over the CU.
