This invention provides a method of managing the initiating of multiple hot plug devices as they are plugged into an information processing or handling system. When an instruction for a initiating a new hot plug operation is received, including a system management interrupt (SMI), the method checks to see if a hot plug operation is already ongoing. If an earlier operation is still ongoing the new operation instruction is restricted so that the earlier operation can be completed. The new hot plug operation and the ongoing operation may be from different devices or the same device. The new hot plug operation may be initiated by pressing an attention button on a device. The new hot plug operation may be restricted by disabling the SMIs from that particular device and re-enabling after the ongoing operation has been completed. The new operation may be restricted by storing the new instruction such that the new operation is pending. The method may manage the current status of each of the plurality of hot plug devices, the status indicating whether an operation is ongoing for a device. The status of the devices may be identified by a value indicating that an operation is ongoing, pending or neither.
