The invention provides a read-write channel of a diagnostic system with a disk drive, and the diagnostic system can process internal and external signals. The read and write channels may have one or more clock generators (360, 362), digital to analog converters (370), analog comparators (376), and sequential drive buffers (374). The read-write channel can be implemented on integrated circuits or complementary metal-oxide semiconductors, and the read-write channel can encode and decode local response maximum similarity. The diagnostic system uses bit weighting or continuous approximation to convert the analog signal to a digital diagnostic signal.
