[0014] Specific examples are shown in the aforementioned figures and described in detail below. In the examples, similar or identical reference numbers are used to denote common or similar elements. The figures are not drawn to scale and certain features and certain views of the figures are shown exaggerated in scale or schematically for clarity and / or conciseness.

[0015] In general, the example methods and devices described herein can be used to apply an axial force to an expandable packer element. The example methods and apparatus may be used, for example, to retrieve a previously expanded packer associated with a downhole tool. More specifically, the example methods and apparatus described herein relate to an inflatable packer assembly for use with a downhole tool, the inflatable packer element (e.g., an elastomeric bladder or body) coupled at one end to the A packer element is a sliding member, casing, ring, or collar that applies an axial force to retract the packer e...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus to apply axial force to a packer in a downhole tool are described. In one described example, an apparatus to apply an axial force to an inflatable packer associated with a downhole tool includes a sleeve slidingly coupled to a body of the downhole tool and an end of the packer. An inner portion of the sleeve is sealed against the body of the downhole tool to form a chamber, and the chamber is fluidly coupled to a pump associated with the downhole tool to receive a pressurized fluid to cause the sleeve to apply an axial force to the packer.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to downhole tools, and more particularly, to methods and apparatus for applying axial force to packers in downhole tools. Background technique [0002] Downhole tools used to sample fluids from subterranean formations, measure formation fluid pressures, perform formation testing, etc. typically include one or more expandable packer assemblies or packers (e.g., straddle packers) to hydraulically isolate Or to seal a section of wellbore or borehole penetrating into the formation to be tested or sampled. Such expandable packer assemblies typically include flexible packer elements made of metal lath or cable reinforced elastic material. However, due to harsh conditions (eg, high temperatures) in many wellbores, the elasticity and mechanical strength of the packer element elastic material can be significantly compromised. Thus, the packer may expand to seal a portion of the wellbore, while possibly maintaining a re...
