Embodiment Construction

[0032]For a general understanding of the invention, reference is now made to the accompanying drawings. Throughout the drawings, the same reference numerals denote the same elements. The term "printer" as used herein, for example, generally refers to reproduction devices such as printers, fax machines, copiers, and related multifunction products, while the term "print job" refers to information (including electronic items) to be copied, for example. References to ink delivery from the ink cartridge or housing to or from the printhead will include fusers, intermediate connections, tubes, manifolds, and / or other components and / or that may be involved in a printing system but are not directly relevant to the present invention meaningful function.

[0033] Referring now to FIG. 1, a block diagram of an embodiment of a phase change ink imaging device 10 is shown. Imaging device 10 has an ink supply 14 that receives and stages solid ink sticks. The ink melting unit 18 heats the i...

Abstract

The invention discloses a visual identification of a solid ink stick. The ink stick comprises an ink stick body configured for insertion in an insertion direction into an ink loader of the phase change ink imaging device. The ink stick body has an insertion perimeter in a plane substantially perpendicular to the insertion direction and has a longitudinal dimension for aligning with a feed direction of the ink loader. A symbol contour is formed in a first position on the perimeter of the ink stick body. The symbol contour defines a portion of a perimeter of a visually recognizable symbol shape and extends at most partially along the perimeter of the ink stick in the longitudinal dimension of the ink stick body. At least one key contour is formed in a second position on the perimeter of the ink stick body corresponding to a color of the ink for the ink stick body.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to phase change inkjet printers, and more particularly to solid ink sticks for use in such inkjet printers. Background technique [0002] Solid ink or phase change ink printers typically receive ink in solid form (either as particles or as ink sticks). Solid ink particles or ink sticks are typically inserted through the insertion opening of the printer's ink loader, and the ink stick is pushed or slid along the feed channel toward the heater plate in the heater assembly using a feed mechanism and / or gravity. The heater plate melts solid ink impinging on the plate into a liquid that is delivered to the printhead for jetting on the recording medium. [0003] One of the challenges faced in solid ink technology is identifying and authenticating ink sticks in order to ensure proper loading and compatibility of the ink stick with the imaging device with which it is used. For example, ink sticks in solid form enable i...
