The invention relates to a rapid motion estimation self-adaptive selection method based on motion complexity. Firstly, according to the time continuity of a video sequence, the frame level judgment of motion complexity is carried out taking the motion complexity of the image of a previous frame as the basis; then according to the result of the frame level judgment, the judgment of macro-block level motion complexity is carried out on image frames required to continue the judgment according to the space correlation of the video sequence; and finally, the motion estimation is carried out on thecurrent macro-block to select the motion estimation method according to the judgment of the motion complexity for the frame level and macro-block level. On the basis of the analysis for the advantages and disadvantages of the diamond search method and the motion estimation method, the invention utilizes the complementarity of the existing methods, combines the self-adaptive threshold value and the judgment of premature termination conditions to select suitable search method through the calculation of the frame-level motion complexity and macro-block level motion complexity of the video sequence. Experiment results show that the invention can achieve the purpose of rapid motion estimation on the precise of guaranteeing the image quality.
