Abstract

The invention discloses an airbag deployment device and a method for deploying the airbag deployment device. The airbag deployment device according to the invention comprises at least one airbag (10) comprising at least a first deployment volume (11), a second deployment volume (12) and a pre-deployment volume. The first expanded volume (11) is larger than the second expanded volume. At least one impact sensor (8, 20, 21, 22) is provided for cooperating with the at least one airbag (10) to detect a situation in which the at least one airbag (10) needs to be deployed. The scenario is a pre-crash scenario and at least one crash sensor (8, 20, 21, 22) is configured to detect an imminent crash, wherein the airbag deployment device is configured to deploy the at least one airbag (10) prior to the crash into a second A deployment volume (11), said first deployment volume (11) being adapted for pre-impact deployment. The apparatus and method of the present invention provide increased safety for passengers in a crash primarily by deploying the air bag prior to the crash.
