Embodiment Construction

[0019] See attached drawings, especially figure 1 , shows an electric gripper and is denoted by reference numeral 10 . A gripper 10 mounted to a robotic arm 15 includes a housing 12 , jaws 14 and gripping fingers 16 . Additionally, an electrical receptacle 18 is shown electrically coupled to the power source and controller.

[0020] Solenoid 20 is secured within housing 12 . The solenoid 20 is a plunger type. The solenoid includes a generally cylindrical coil 22 and a bore 26 extending through its center. The plunger 24 is slidably positioned in the bore 26 . The plunger 24 defines the axis of the solenoid 20 . A permanent magnet 28 is positioned along the axis of the plunger 24 . A permanent magnet 28 is secured by fasteners to the base of the solenoid 20 at the bottom of the stroke of the plunger 24 . Therefore, the permanent magnet 28 holds and locks the plunger in place at the bottom of its stroke. Bracket 30 is mounted to coil 22 such that it couples with solenoid...

Abstract

The invention relates to a solenoid gripper, i.e. an electrical gripper, which has a housing and a solenoid plunger. A pair of jaws are movably mounted with the housing. The jaws are movable towards and away from each other. The jaws are coupled with the solenoid plunger to provide movement to the jaws. A first mechanism is associated with the solenoid plunger to lock the solenoid plunger in a first position when power is terminated to the solenoid plunger. A second mechanism is associated with the solenoid plunger to lock the solenoid plunger in a second position when power is terminated to the solenoid plunger. Thus, the jaws are actively locked in an open or close position when power is terminated to the solenoid plunger.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a gripper device and, more particularly, to a motorized gripper with a solenoid actuated mechanism. Background technique [0002] Pneumatic grippers exist in the art. However, users of pneumatic grippers want to replace pneumatics with electrics for various reasons. It is desirable to have alternative actuators because of lower energy costs and for applications where pneumatics are not suitable or available. One such application is a controlled clean room. [0003] Electric grippers exist in the art. However, these electric grippers are expensive and difficult to operate when compared to their pneumatic counterparts. This increases the cost and complexity of the gripper. Most electric grippers require feedback devices and complex control systems. [0004] Solenoid-actuated grippers have been used in the past. However, a problem with these grippers is that they form a large heat buildup. This is due to the consta...
