Problems solved by technology

Although the sphere is a lightweight material, it must have a metal cap so that the magnetic force can act on it, which disadvantageously increases the weight of the sphere and results in the need for significant air thrust to keep the sphere in the air

Embodiment Construction

[0019] Referring to the drawings (where like numerals indicate like elements), in which figure 1 The suspended finned sphere device 1 of the present invention is shown in . The device 1 comprises a sphere 2 and a base 3 for suspending the sphere 2 above the base 3 .

[0020] like figure 1 As shown, the base 3 includes a spherical fan assembly 4 and a power and control box 5 that supplies low voltage power to the fan assembly 4 through a cable bundle or wire 6 . The base 3 is pivotable to direct the air flow from the fan assembly 4 in different directions. The power and control box 5 includes a plug adapted to plug into a wall outlet. Alternatively, the blower assembly 4 may be powered by batteries. Although the power and control box 5 is shown as a separate unit from the base 3 , the power and control box 5 could also be integrated into the housing of the base 3 .

[0021] The fan assembly 4 includes a sphere interface assembly 7 , a fan 8 and an air stratification device...

Abstract

A levitated finned ball device includes a ball made of a lightweight material and a base that generates laminar air flow to levitate the ball in mid-air. The ball has at least one generally semi-circular shaped fin extending therefrom. When the laminar air flow strikes the fin, it imparts motion to the ball.

Description

[0001] Cross application of related applications [0002] This application claims priority to provisional application 60 / 480493, filed June 23,2003. technical field [0003] The invention relates to a device for levitating a sphere. In particular, a device for providing entertainment and recreation by levitating a lightweight sphere having at least one fin extending therefrom is shown. Background technique [0004] The sphere can be levitated with air directed at the sphere for fun and recreation. For example US patent 4045906 discloses a hand held fixed thrust blower unit for levitating spheres. The sphere can be a lightweight foam ball or a ping pong ball. The sphere is suspended in the air by the fan, and the user moves the fan unit, thereby moving the sphere through an obstacle. Similarly, US Patent 2911745 discloses a device for blowing a stream of air upwards on a light hollow ball or balloon to suspend it in the air for performance purposes. Both of these prior a...
