[0081] The presence of moisture is particularly detrimental to optical fibers, so optical fibers usually include flexible layers or materials, films or ribbons ( Figure 4 26 in ), they generally include an absorbent polymer and polyester backing material between the core and the outer sheath, which absorbs any water that attempts to penetrate the sheath layer. The flexible material expands when it absorbs water, having the effect that the longitudinal path along the remainder of the cable is blocked preventing further ingress of water. During manufacture of the cable, the water-swellable tape is typically applied around the core by winding it such that the edges of the tape overlap in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cable.
