Embodiment Construction

[0036]An axial flow turbine, such as a gas turbine or a steam turbine, typically includes a plurality of turbine stages, each turbine stage comprising an annular array of angularly spaced moving blades preceded by an annular array of angularly spaced stationary vanes , the function of the stationary guide vane is to guide the turbine working fluid onto the moving blades.

[0037] refer to figure 1 , shows the radially outer part of the moving blade, which comprises an airfoil 10 and an arcuate blade shroud 11 mounted on the radially outer tip of the airfoil 10 and integrated therewith. Adjacent blade shrouds 11 cooperate to form an annular shroud ring. A circumferentially extending stationary housing 12 is positioned radially outward from and surrounds the moving blade.

[0038] exist figure 1 In a particular embodiment of the invention, each blade shroud 11 has a radially outer toothed surface 14 consisting of a plurality of axially spaced, radially outer, circumferentiall...

Abstract

A labyrinth seal (20) prevents a leakage flow (21) through a gap between facing stationary (12) and moving (11) parts in a turbomachine. The seal includes axially spaced and circumferentially extending seal fins (26, 28) arranged in leakage flow sequence and projecting across the gap from at least one of the facing members to sealingly adjacent the opposing facing member. The fins (26, 28) have at least distal end portions (34) that are bent or sloped in the upstream direction of the leakage flow to deflect the leakage flow (21) in the upstream direction. The continuous fins define cavities (40, 42) containing recirculation vortices (25, 36) created by the deflected leakage flow.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to labyrinth seals, and in particular to labyrinth seals for sealing between stationary and moving parts in turbomachines such as axial flow gas turbines, steam turbines or compressors. Background technique [0002] Labyrinth seals are commonly used to provide a seal between stationary and rotating components in a turbine, such as an axial flow gas or steam turbine, and thus minimize fluid leakage. [0003] In EP1001139A1 the figure 1 A conventional labyrinth seal for sealing between the tip of a moving blade and a radially adjacent stationary casing in an axial turbine is shown in . In this conventional labyrinth seal, axially spaced and circumferentially extending seal fins are caulked into a stationary housing and traverse fluid flow towards a toothed arcuate blade shroud at the blade tip The paths protrude radially inward. Radial clearances are typically provided between the tip of each seal fin and the ra...
