Embodiment Construction

[0084] Exemplary embodiments of the present invention provide an automatic injection device wherein the needle shield automatically deploys in a reliable and consistent manner to protectively cover the needle after an injection with the automatic injection device. Exemplary embodiments of the present invention also provide a shield deployment assembly including a needle shield and a syringe carrier that, when cooperatively configured in an automatic injection device, ensures that the needle shield is securely and securely closed after an injection with the automatic injection device. Automatically expand in a consistent manner. Thus, exemplary embodiments of the present invention avoid the risk of accidental needle injury caused by exposed needles.

[0085] Exemplary embodiments of the present invention are also configured to ensure that accidental forces applied to the shield when deployed to the extended position enveloping the needle do not subsequently cause the shield to ...

Abstract

Exemplary embodiments of the present invention provide an automatic injection device in which the shield is automatically deployed to protectively cover the needle after an injection has been administered. Exemplary embodiments of the present invention also provide a shield deployment assembly including a shield and a syringe carrier which, when cooperatively configured into an automatic injection device, ensures that the shield is automatically fully deployed following an injection with the automatic injection device . Exemplary embodiments of the present invention are also configured to ensure that when the shield is deployed to the extended position to cover the needle, accidental force applied to the shield does not cause the shield to subsequently retract to a retracted position that would expose the needle.

Description

technical field [0001] This application is a non-provisional application of and claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 469,077, filed March 29, 2011. This application is also related to US Patent Application No. 12 / 770,557, filed April 29, 2010. The entire content of each of the foregoing applications is hereby expressly incorporated by reference. Background technique [0002] Automatic injection devices provide an alternative to manually operated syringes for delivering therapeutic agents into a patient and allow the patient to administer the injections themselves. Automatic injection devices are already used to deliver drugs in emergency situations, such as injecting epinephrine to counteract the effects of a severe allergic reaction. Automatic injection devices have also been described for infusing antiarrhythmic drugs and selective thrombolytics during a heart attack (see, e.g., U.S. Patent Nos. 3,910,260, 4,004,577, 4,689,042, 4,755,169, and 4,795...
