Embodiment Construction

[0018] In existing heater bimetals and assemblies, the installation of the heater bimetal into the circuit breaker housing can result in misalignment of the heater bimetal within the circuit breaker housing. Such misalignment may result in a shift in the position of the bimetallic element relative to the trip member of the trip mechanism. Calibration of circuit breakers can become more difficult and variable due to such misalignment. Additionally, one or more embodiments may help prevent assembly of damaged heater elements or incorrectly formed elements. Additionally, various embodiments may provide a more efficient connection into the housing. Also, ideally, the assembly of the circuit breaker components into the circuit breaker housing is entirely gravity assembled. That is, all components should drop vertically into the breaker housing by gravity, and all fasteners connecting the heater bimetal to the breaker housing should also assemble vertically.

Abstract

A heater bimetal device is disclosed. The heater bimetal device has: a heating element having a first portion and a second portion; a bimetal element coupled to the heating element at a third portion between the first portion and the second portion; and coupled to the heating element at the third portion. A support member for the component, the support member including an alignment surface adapted to be received in a groove formed in a spaced-apart portion of the circuit breaker housing. As in other aspects, an assembly including a heater bimetal device and a method of assembling a heater bimetal assembly are provided.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to circuit breakers, and more particularly to heater-bimetal assemblies suitable for use in circuit breakers. Background technique [0002] Within the circuit breaker, one or more movable electrical contacts may be provided. In certain circuit breaker configurations, such electrical contacts may be electrically coupled to the heater bimetal assembly by one or more flexible conductors. The function of the heater bimetal assembly is to trip the circuit breaker when a permanent overcurrent condition is encountered in the circuit protected by the circuit breaker. Tripping involves resistive heating of the heating element, which in turn heats the bimetallic element, causing the bimetallic element to bend. When bent, the bimetallic element engages in engaging contact with a portion of the trip mechanism and, if sufficient heating is present, will trip the circuit breaker as a result. This breaks the electrical conta...
