Embodiment Construction

[0035] figure 1 An exemplary visualized conference participant is shown on a terminal screen in a video conference system in which the invention is used. Without loss of generality, four conference participants are shown. For technical reasons, representations that are originally color images are drawn as grayscale images in this application, and representations that are originally black and white or grayscale images are drawn as line drawings.

[0036] In the description of the examples, figure 1 The notations introduced in will be used to refer to different (categories) of conference participants.

[0037] In the following, an "observation relationship" between a first user and a second user will be understood to designate a situation in which the first user is looking directly at the visual representation of the second user on his video conferencing terminal. A video conferencing terminal (or simply "terminal") used in embodiments of the present invention may be a dedica...

Abstract

A method for conducting a video conference, said method comprising: - visualizing representations of a plurality of conference participants on a display of a terminal; - detecting a gazing direction of a user of said terminal; - determining a first observation relationship between said user and a first one of said conference participants (U1), said first one of said conference participants (U1) being identified by correlating said detected gazing direction with a presently observed one of said visualized representations; and - visually differentiating said representation of said first one of said conference participants (U1).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of videoconferencing, and in particular to improving the interaction between videoconferencing participants. Background technique [0002] Eye gaze is a useful element when communicating in groups of three or more people. For the speaker, to direct his attention to a particular person and get feedback from him; for the listener, to understand who the speaker is speaking to and who (or what) the rest of the listener is looking at; and for the listener Turn-taking and eye-catching information are useful. Likewise, people can see each other (visibility), they know that others can see them (cognition), and they know that others know they can see them (accountability). The latter is known as social translucency. [0003] In a face-to-face conversation, personal eye contact is easy to detect. However, in today's multi-party video calls (computer mediated communication), all participants are almost looking direct...
