Abstract

An excavation machine includes a boom, a cutterhead body, a valve and an actuator. The boom defines an interior chamber and includes a first end coupled to the frame, a second end, and an opening in fluid communication with the interior chamber. The cutter head body includes a plurality of cutter heads, and the cutter head body is supported on the second end of the boom. The valve is coupled to the boom and is movable between a closed position in which the opening is covered and an open position in which the opening is at least partially open. The actuator is coupled to the valve to selectively move the valve between a closed position and an open position.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 765,390, filed February 15, 2013, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] The present invention relates to excavating machines. In particular, the present application relates to airflow systems for continuous excavation machines. [0004] Conventional continuous excavation and entry development machines include airflow systems adjacent the mine face to remove cut material and contaminants. During operation, the cutterhead often changes position, moving between the bottom and top of the mine. Current machinery draws air from the cutting face through the tool holder. Movement of the cutter body changes the location at which air is drawn into the airflow system. Additionally, the cramped underground environment places very significant space constraints on entry boring machines and continuous exc...
