A round-shank bit for a coal cutting machine or the like, having a bit head and a bit shank, wherein the bit head has a bit tip, maintained by a base element in a receptacle of the bit head. Starting at the base element, the bit tip tapers in a direction toward the free end of the bit tip, wherein the base element forms a maximum diameter of the bit tip, and wherein the bit tip has recesses on its outer contour. In order to assure good rotational behavior over the entire length of the operating time, the base element has the recesses on an outer circumference forming the maximum diameter.

A drilling bit for use in conjunction with a holder that has a bore wherein the drilling bit has a drilling bit body that has an axial forward end and an axial rearward end. The drilling bit body further includes a reduced diameter portion adjacent to the axial rearward end thereof so as to define a reduced diameter surface. The invention discloses an in-hole drilling tool integrating drilling, slotting and punching a coal seam and a using method thereof. The in-hole drilling tool comprises a water supple device or an air supple device, a high-pressure sealing drill pipe, a slotting and punching valve and a drill bit. The water supply device and the air supply device are connected with the high-pressure sealing drill pipe at an orifice. The using method is as follows: after the drilling construction is finished, a water supplier with a pressure release valve is used for starting a high-pressure pumping station to improve the pressure and the flux for water supply; high-pressure water current at the pumping station drives the slotting and punching valve to act for closing an axial liquid passage and opening a radial liquid passage; and high-pressure jet current realizes slotting or punching through a cutting nozzle or a punching nozzle. The invention has novel design and easy operation, is safe and reliable, improves the outburst elimination efficiency and realizes the integrated operation of drilling, slotting or punching and outburst eliminating.

A cutting bit for impinging earth strata wherein the cutting bit includes a highly wear-resistant elongate cutting bit body, which has an axial forward end and an axial rearward end, an enlarged dimension head portion at the axial forward end and a reduced dimension shank portion at the axial rearward end. The highly wear-resistant elongate cutting bit body has a maximum transverse dimension and a longitudinal axial length. The cutting bit includes a superhard insert, which is affixed to the head portion at the axial forward end of the cutting bit body. The cutting bit has a slimness ratio, which comprises the ratio of the maximum transverse dimension to the longitudinal axial length wherein the cutting bit exhibits a slimness ratio ranging between about 0.15 and about 0.60.

In one aspect of the invention, an attack tool is disclosed which comprises a wear-resistant base suitable for attachment to a driving mechanism. The wear-resistant base has a shank and a metal segment. A cemented metal carbide segment is bonded to the metal segment and the shank has a wear-resistant surface. In one aspect of the present invention, a pick comprises a forward end and rearward end. The forward end comprises a shearing cutter and the rearward end comprises a shank. A control system for continuous mining machine to control the mining horizons of roof and floor horizons relative to the rock boundaries of an underground coal seam or ore vein. The mining machine is provided with a cutting drum mounted on a pivoted arm to allow for vertical displacement of the cutter to control the mining height. A plurality of sensors is carried on the rotatable arm to locate the roof and floor boundaries. Attitude sensors are mounted on the machine for providing signals indicative of the inclinations of the body of the machine, and, a microprocessor receives the signals from the boundary sensors and the attitude sensors for calculating the required roof cut and floor cut. A display device receives the signals from the microprocessor and displays the calculated results to the machine operator.

Apparatus and methods of using lasers are provided for spalling and drilling holes into rocks. A rock removal process is provided that utilizes a combination of laser-induced thermal stress and laser induced superheated steam explosions just below the surface of the laser/rock interaction to spall the rock into small fragments that can then be easily removed by a purging flow. Single laser beams of given irradiance spall rock and create holes having diameter and depth approximately equal to the beam spot size. A group of the single laser beams are steered in a controllable manner by an electro-optic laser beam switch to locations on the surface of the rock, creating multiple overlapping spalled holes thereby removing a layer of rock of a desired diameter. Drilling of a deep hole is achieved by spalling consecutive layers with an intermittent feed motion of the laser head perpendicular to the rock surface.

There are provided high power laser and laser mechanical earth removing equipment, and operations using laser cutting tools having stand off distances. These equipment provide high power laser beams, greater than 1 kW to cut and volumetrically remove targeted materials and to remove laser affected material with gravity assistance, mechanical cutters, fluid jets, scrapers and wheels. There is also provided a method of using this equipment in mining, road resurfacing and other earth removing or working activities.
