Systems and methods are presented for providing improved news results to news queries by entity expansion. In response to receiving a news query from a computer user, the news engine identifies one or more entities of interest to the computer user. Extended entity data corresponding to one or more entities of interest is obtained, the extended entity data identifying related entities of the one or more entities of interest. The extended entity data also includes category data corresponding to categories of one or more entities of interest.
