Abstract

A method for enhancing Long Term Evolution (LTE) backup channels performed by a slave network edge node (eg, Broadband Network Gateway BNG2) if a primary network edge node (eg, BNG1) failure occurs in a wireline network. When BNG2 detects a failure of BNG1, BNG2 sends a failure update message to the Packet Data Network Gateway (PDN GW) of the LTE network. The PDN GW provides an alternate channel for the CPE to reach the WAN through the mobile tunnel. Before the failure, the mobility tunnel had an endpoint at BNG1, and the failure update message informs the PDN GW that the endpoint of the mobility tunnel has changed from BNG1 to BNG2. After BNG2 receives the fault confirmation message from PDN GW, BNG2 routes the service from PDN GW through the mobility tunnel to the wide area network.
