Embodiment Construction

[0024] Many known turbofan engines employ thrust reversers to decelerate the aircraft during landing. The reverse thrust produced reduces the forward thrust produced by the turbofan engine, thereby reducing the speed of the aircraft. In some instances, reverse thrust is produced by redirecting airflow in the engine that would otherwise produce forward thrust. For example, redirecting airflow that would otherwise be ejected from the rear of the engine to generate positive thrust exits the engine in a circumferentially outward direction and / or in a generally forward direction via the cascade system. In some examples, doors are provided in the engine to redirect airflow through the engine toward the thrust reverser mechanism. However, known cascade systems of known thrust reverser systems divert all or none of the thrust. As a result, reverse thrust is not used to move commercial aircraft backwards from a fixed or stationary position.

Abstract

Methods and apparatus to vary reverse thrust of aircraft engines are disclosed. An example cascade apparatus disclosed herein includes a cascade frame (610) having a first end (620), a second end (622), and a fixed structure (618) extending between the first end and second end, where the cascade frame (610) defines a slot (626). A cascade (608) forms a reverse thrust flow path (606) and at least a portion of the cascade (608) is slidably coupled to the frame (610) via the slot (626). The cascade (608) slides relative the frame (610) between a first position to produce a first reverse thrust and a second position to produce a second reverse thrust, where the first reverse thrust is different than the second reverse thrust.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application relates generally to aircraft engines and, more particularly, to methods and apparatus for varying the thrust reverse of an aircraft engine. Background technique [0002] Aircraft turbofan engines often employ a thrust reverser system to generate reverse thrust to help decelerate the aircraft during landing (eg, after landing), thereby reducing brake wear and shortening the landing distance. For example, a thrust reverser system may be employed to provide additional stopping power during landing in adverse weather conditions (eg, on wet, muddy, or slippery runways). To generate reverse thrust and / or reduce forward thrust, many known reverser systems for turbofan engines include a cascade system to redirect or disrupt airflow that would otherwise produce forward thrust (e.g., airflow provided by a fan of a turbofan engine ). [0003] While a thrust reverser system with a cascade system generally reduces the net forward thrust p...
