Abstract

Tubular depth filter elements have one or more concentric regions. Each zone includes multiple layers of meltblown filaments. The additional filament is vibrated through the depth of the element, traversing part of the depth of the filament with each oscillation, but traversing substantially the full depth of the element with multiple oscillations. The crossing filaments are preferably biased towards the outside of the element. Depth filter elements can be made by spraying filaments onto a rotating mandrel. Concentric regions of filaments are sprayed from fixed nozzles spaced along the length of the mandrel. The transverse filaments are sprayed from a nozzle assembly that moves laterally or has compound motion relative to the mandrel. For example, the nozzle assembly may vibrate relative to the spindle while the air damper of the nozzle assembly vibrates relative to the remainder of the nozzle assembly.
