Embodiment Construction

[0236] The invention described herein is conceived to provide a solution to improving sanitation in rural areas of developing countries, especially India, and is applicable to Western-style toilet systems, such as camp toilets, highway "rest stops", especially in remote areas Toilets and toilet systems in remote resorts.

[0237] The present invention comprises a sealing and diversion system for simplifying the construction and improving the performance and reliability of toilets using multiple pits, such as dual-pit pour-over flush (TPPF) toilets. The present invention consists of a flow diversion system for use in place of the p-trap and Y-junction box currently used in the construction of multi-pit toilets, providing the means of diverting flow to one pit and blocking flow to the other alternative means. Optionally, the system may include a self-sealing baffle arrangement that provides sealing benefits to the system. Also included are methods of diverting waste streams in...

Abstract

The invention relates to a multiple-pit latrine and a diversion system therefor. The diversion system may include a collection cavity that has an upper portion for receiving waste from the outlet of alatrine pan, and two or more apertures for connection to drain conduits. The diversion system may include a diversion mechanism to direct flow from the collection cavity to one of the two or more apertures. The diversion mechanism may be rotatable from a first position to a second position relative to the apertures to direct flow from the collection cavity to one of the two or more apertures.

Background technique [0003] According to statistics initiated by the World Health Organization and UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund), it is estimated that 2.5 billion people in the world do not have access to safe sanitation. About 1 billion of this group regularly practice open defecation, while the remaining 1.5 billion are forced to use some kind of shared or poorly-conditioned facility. Some 850,000 people – mostly children under the age of five – die each year from water and san...
