The invention discloses a forbidden object detection system and method based on digital image processing, which are used for detecting forbidden objects in an X-ray security inspection machine. The forbidden object detection method comprises the following steps of carrying out X-ray scanning on objects in the security inspection machine; carrying out median filtering, color space conversion, threshold segmentation, binary processing and contour feature extraction on scanned X-ray images; matching outlines of all the extracted objects with the outlines of the forbidden objects in a forbidden object library one by one; and carrying out automatic detection and identification on the forbidden objects according to an outline matching result, respectively marking the different kinds of forbiddenobjects, and carrying out sound-light alarm if the forbidden objects are detected.
