Abstract

The systems and methods disclosed herein relate to an intelligent UI element selection system using eye gaze technology. In some example aspects, a UI element selection area may be determined. A selection area may be defined as an area around the border of a UI element. Gaze input may be received and compared to the selection area to determine user intent. Gaze input may include one or more gaze locations. Each gaze location may be assigned a value based on its proximity to the UI element and / or its relationship to the UI element's selection area. Each UI element can be assigned a threshold. If the aggregated value of the gaze input is equal to or greater than the UI element's threshold, the UI element may be selected.

Description

Background technique [0001] Eye gaze or eye tracking is a means of accessing electronic devices or communication aids using an input device (eg, mouse) controlled by one or more eyes of a user. Eye gaze interaction technology can allow users to communicate and interact with electronic devices without using hands and fingers to type. For example, users with certain movement disabilities may be able to communicate using eye gaze technology. Currently, the dominant technique for gaze communication is eye typing. To type by eye, the user looks at letters on an on-screen (or virtual) keyboard. If the user's gaze remains fixed on the same letter for a set period of time (dwell timeout), the system recognizes the user's selection of that letter. Unfortunately, even the best eye-typing systems are relatively slow, with reported typing speeds ranging from 7 to 20 words per minute, with a plateau of around 23 words per minute. Such dwell-based eye typing techniques may result in uns...
