Abstract

Radiotelephone dialing interfaces are provided wherein rotary dials and/or various switches are utilized to display and select alphanumeric characters within a radiotelephone display screen without the need for conventional keypads.

Description

field of invention [0001] This invention relates generally to radiotelephones, and more particularly to dialing interfaces for radiotelephones. Background of the invention [0002] Telecommunications devices, such as wireless telephones, have become increasingly popular for both personal and business use. However, as their popularity has increased, radiotelephones have also undergone miniaturization for storage and portability. In fact, some current wireless telephone prototypes are only 11-12 cm in length. [0003] Unfortunately, as wireless phones become smaller, less area is available for the user's keypad to operate the wireless phone. As a result, the keyboard is also smaller, resulting in a smaller size and spacing of the keys in the keyboard. However, for ergonomic reasons, there is a limit below which further reductions in the size and spacing of keys in a keyboard may be undesirable. As a result, further miniaturization of radiotelephones may be constrained due ...
