Problems solved by technology

This type of system therefore cannot take advantage of the higher extrusion head speeds that could have been employed along some of the straighter portions of the fold line, and is thus limited to the lowest maximum speed available for any portion of the fold line with a larger deviation angle

Embodiment Construction

[0015] The method and apparatus of the present invention may be used in extrusion systems that extrude molding material from a liquefier pump. In particular, it can be used in various types of molding or prototyping systems that utilize an extrusion head to deposit "roads" of heated flowable material that shrinks and solidifies upon cooling to form a solid model. A preferred material deposition and shaping process is of the type disclosed in US Patent No. 5,121,329.

[0016] figure 1 An exemplary three-dimensional molding apparatus 10 is shown having an extrusion head 20 that deposits molding material under the control of a controller 25 . The extrusion head 20 has a liquefier 26 that receives a feedstock of molding material and heats it to the temperature required for extrusion. Molten molding material is deposited as beads 21 from the end 30 of the liquefier 26 onto a planar substrate 32 (partially shown). In the preferred embodiment shown, the molding material stock is a...

Abstract

An extrusion apparatus (10) employs a method for controlling the output flow rate of a liquifier (26). The apparatus (10) includes an extrusion head (20) which moves along a predetermined tool path at an extrusion head velocity. The extrusion head (20) carries the liquifier (26). The liquifier (26) receives a solid element of a modeling material (14), heats the modeling material, and outputs a flow of the modeling material at an output flow rate. A material advance mechanism (23) is employed to supply the solid element of modeling material (14) to the liquifier (26) at an input rate which controls the output flow rate. In order to control the output flow rate, an extrusion head velocity profile is determined based on the tool path. The input rate of modeling material (14) to the liquifier (26) is then controlled to produce an output flow rate of modeling material from the liquifier (26) that is proportional to a current extrusion head velocity corresponding to the extrusion head velocity profile.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the fabrication of three-dimensional objects using extrusion-based layered fabrication processes. In particular, the present invention relates to a system and method for: when molding material is extruded three-dimensionally in a predetermined pattern relative to a substrate, so as to produce an output of a liquefier that is related to the changing speed of the extrusion head The flow of flow, which feeds the solid molding material to the liquefier carried by the extrusion head. Background technique [0002] Three-dimensional models are used to include aesthetic judgments, to prove mathematical models, to form hard tools, to study the function of interference and spatial orientation, and to test functionality. Extrusion-based layered manufacturing equipment builds a three-dimensional model by extruding a curable molding material in a predetermined pattern from an extrusion head based on design data provided from a comp...
