Embodiment Construction

[0033] The present invention relates to computer-based language learning methods. The present invention can be practiced in a computer network environment. The present invention uses concepts of osmotic learning, collaborative learning and educational games to bring a learning experience to users in the form of user-controlled characters in simulated foreign environments.

[0034] Figure 1 shows an example of a screenshot that may be displayed on a user display according to the present invention. In this example, an English-speaking user is learning Spanish. The user display (not shown) may be a display associated with a personal computer, personal digital assistant, or other computing device adapted to execute software for implementing the invention or to receive information from a remote computer processor for displayed information.

[0035] This screenshot depicts an environment 1 in which the user can be immersed. As shown in Figures 1-3, the environment has a three-di...

Abstract

A computer-implemented method of language learning, which displays a three dimensional environment on a user display. A user can navigate a character representation (3) around the environment. A plurality of destination points (2A, 2B, 2C) are provided in the environment for the character (3), wherein at least at selected destination points either exemplar or interactive conversations (7, 8) are initiated with the character (3).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to computer-implemented language learning methods, particularly but not exclusively to language learning methods utilizing computer networks. Background technique [0002] Learning a new language is a difficult and long-term process for most people, especially if their friends, family and colleagues do not expose them to the language. Access to personal tutoring is not always available to everyone for various reasons, so software has been developed to enable computer-based learning. However, the Applicant believes that existing software for assisting language learning is suboptimal and could be improved, or at least not adapted to everyone's learning style. [0003] Accordingly, there is a need for computer-implemented language learning methods that provide improved teaching tools, or at least computer-based language learning methods that replace those existing methods. Contents of the invention [0004] According to o...
