Embodiment Construction

[0023] figure 1 and 2 A bone anchoring device 1 according to a first embodiment is shown. The bone anchoring device 1 comprises a uniaxial bone screw 2 and a tubular rod 20 . The bone screw 2 has a shank 3 with bone threads for anchoring in bone, a tip at one end (not shown) and a receiving portion 5 at the opposite end. The receiving portion 5 includes a generally U-shaped groove 5 a for receiving the rod 20 . By means of the groove, two free legs 5b, 5b' are formed having an internal thread 5c for receiving a locking element to fix the rod 20 in the groove. In the embodiment shown, the locking element is an internal screw 50 which can be screwed between the legs. The threads may be plain to prevent the legs from spreading when the internal threads are tightened. However, any other thread shape may be used, such as metric threads, serrated threads or negative threads. In the assembled state, the rod 20 rests on the bottom of the groove 5a.

Abstract

A bone anchoring device is provided comprising an anchoring element (2, 2') comprising a shank (3) to be anchored in a bone or a vertebra and a receiving part (5, 5') connected to the shank; a rod (20, 20') for connecting at least two anchoring elements; wherein the receiving part (5, 5') comprises a recess (5a, 11) for receiving said rod and wherein said rod has at least in a portion thereof a tubular shape; a locking element (50, 29) cooperating with the receiving part to secure the rod in the recess; a filling piece (60, 22) being arranged between the locking element (50, 29) and the rod (20, 20') for exerting pressure onto the rod to lock the rod in the recess, the filling piece comprising a rod contacting surface (61, 25) which contacts a portion of said rod, wherein the shape of therod contacting surface is adapted to the shape of the portion of the rod.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a bone anchoring device comprising a bone anchoring element and a rod for connecting at least two bone anchoring elements, wherein the rod has a tubular structure at least in a part thereof. Background technique [0002] Figure 12 A known polyaxial bone screw 100 is shown with a screw element 101 having a bone thread and a spherical truncated head 102 which is held pivotably in a receiving part 103 . The receiving portion has a groove for receiving the rod 104 . Between the head 102 and the rod there is a pressure element 105 slidable in the receiving part. The internal screw 106 is used to clamp the rod in the receiving part and to exert pressure on the head by the rod and the pressure element to lock the head. A flexible rod with a tubular structure for stabilizing the spine is known for example from US2005 / 0154390A1. When the tubular rod is used with as reference Figure 12 When used with said known polyaxial bone screws...
