[0037] In FIG. 1 , a combined device for reading and erasing an exposed imaging plate is indicated generally at 10 . The device comprises a reading unit generally indicated at 12 and an erasing unit generally indicated at 14 .

Background technique [0002] The exposed imaging plate contains a latent x-ray image in the form of locally excited metastable excited color centers obtained by placing the imaging plate behind an object in the x-rays generated by the x-ray source. [0003] The latent image is read by scanning the imaging plate point by point with a small diameter reading beam. The wavelength of the read light is selected such that it excites the metastable excited center to a higher electronic state that decays rapidly under fluorescence.
