Problems solved by technology

[0004] Because electronic components find it difficult to withstand excessive heat, designers are faced with the dilemma of either making noise and risking overheating components, or ventilating the interior of the device as much as possible but potentially making the device noisy

Embodiment Construction

[0022] figure 1 A cross-section of an electronic device such as a television decoder is depicted. The device comprises a printed circuit 1 on which an electronic circuit 2 is arranged. The hard disk 3 enables the recording of data, in particular of longer audiovisual work. The circuit 2 and the hard disk 3 consume a lot of energy and generate heat, for example, the central unit of the decoder generates about 6 watts of energy. Therefore, certain regions of the decoder ( figure 1 marked in gray) is hotter than other regions. A temperature probe 4 arranged in one of these warm regions, preferably close to the circuit that consumes the most energy, provides a voltage proportional to temperature. A fan 5 draws hot air from the decoder cavity. Two ventilation air inlets 6 inserted (cutinto) into the decoder housing form two cooling air inlets. Curved arrows show the path of air flow. The number, location, and size of the air inlets are important elements of good ventilation,...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for controlling the speed of a fan equipping an electronic device and being used to cool it. A speed control value is calculated according to the temperature measured within the electronic device. This command value being limited to a maximum determined value, in such a manner that the fan is not audible. The method comprises a measurement step of the ambient sound level. If the ambient sound level exceeds a determined threshold then the speed of the fan is increased as the ambient sound covers the sound of the fan, even at great speed. An improvement consists in that during the introduction of a sound lowering command, the speed of the fan immediately returns below the maximum value. The present invention also relates to the device implementing the method.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method of controlling fan speed using measurements of ambient noise. The invention also relates to a device equipped with a microphone and a fan. Background technique [0002] Electronic devices consume a lot of energy during normal operation. This energy is converted to heat, which is concentrated in the usually sealed equipment. If this heat cannot be dissipated, it will cause accelerated aging of the electronic components, which leads to irreversible degradation. To prevent this, manufacturers cut air inlets in the housing of the device in order to be able to exhaust the hot air. A fan is placed near the inlet to speed up the exchange with the outside world and to enable cooling of the internal components. However using the fan at full speed is noisy. For example, if the device is a TV decoder, it would be placed in a bedroom. In this way, the device must not disturb the user's sleep; the generally allowed ma...
