Embodiment Construction

[0045] At the outset it should be noted that in the following the following definitions are applied to certain terms whose exact meanings are not always agreed in the technical literature:

[0046] - Limonite: 50-70% Fe 2 o 3 and an ore fraction up to 5% MgO;

[0047] - Saprolite: 7-27% Fe 2 o 3 and an ore fraction of at least 10% MgO.

[0048] figure 1 The basic form of the method of the present invention, which will be referred to as "Format 1" hereinafter, is shown.

[0049] In a first step, a mixture 2 of limonite and saprolite is slurried with seawater 3 . This mixture 2 of limonite and saprolite is optimally a lateritic nickel ore with no separation of the magnesium-rich and low-magnesium fractions. The saprolite / limonite ratio is preferably 0.5-3. This pulping process makes it possible to obtain solids contents of 10-40% by weight, preferably 20-30% by weight.

[0050] In the second step 4, the slurry obtained in the first step 1 is leached with sulfuric acid 5...

Abstract

Process for the treatment of a lateritic nickel/cobalt ore consisting of a mixture (2) of limonite and saprolite, characterized in that: the mixture (2) in the presence of an iron-precipitating agent is made into a pulp (1), having a solids content of between 10 and 40% by weight; the pulp undergoes a leaching operation (4) with sulphuric acid (5), at a temperature between 70 DEG C and the boiling point and at atmospheric pressure; and a solid-liquid separation (8) is carried out so as to obtain an iron-containing solid residue (9) and a solution containing nickel and cobalt ions. Process for producing nickel and/or cobalt intermediate concentrates or commercial products using the above process.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the hydrometallurgical treatment of oxidized ores of nickel and cobalt in order to obtain a solution containing in particular nickel and cobalt extracted from the ore, which solution can then be treated in order to recover intermediate concentrates or in the form of commercial products Nickel and / or Cobalt. Background technique [0002] Ores of nickel and cobalt fall into various categories. One of the main categories is the so-called "oxide" or "later" ores, in which nickel and cobalt are in the form of oxides and are present in two fractions placed in superimposed layers: [0003] - the so-called "limonite" (or sometimes "laterite") fraction which is relatively poor in magnesium and relatively rich in iron; [0004] - Conversely the so-called "saprolite" fraction which is relatively rich in magnesium and relatively poor in iron. [0005] Various hydrometallurgical methods have been proposed for obtaining such solut...
