Embodiment Construction

[0018] The part of the sealing plug that is the same for all these examples is designed to seal a circular cross-section hole 11 in a steel wall 12 of a liquid or gas container. The plug comprises a radially expandable body consisting of a cylindrical shell 13 . The shell can be radially expanded by approaching only the upper end of the shell through which an elongated rod 15 protrudes. The extension is provided with circumferential ridges and grooves 16 by means of which the rod communicates with the Figure 4 and Figure 6 The jaws 34 of the installation tool are shown engaging. The abutment 17 of the rod has no groove and extends into a bore 18 of the housing. The adjoining portion 17 is connected to the integral head 19 , 21 by a breakneck 22 . The abutment portion 19 of the head is located in the bore of the housing and the radially enlarged portion 21 of the head is located below the lower end face 23 of the housing. Abstract

A sealing plug (13) for sealing a hole (11) in a wall, which sealing plug (13) is insertable into the hole (11) by access from only one side thereof, which sealing plug (13) comprises: a radially expandable body which is radially expandable by access thereto from only one end thereof, and a sealing cap (24) which covers the other end of the expandable body and extends therefrom along the exterior of the length of the body, the sealing cap (24) being of a material which is fluid resistant; whereby, when the sealing plug (13) has been inserted in the hole (11) and has been radially expanded so that at least part of the sealing cap (24) adjacent the wall of the hole expands and engages therewith, the sealing cap (24) is secured in the hole (11) with the sealing cap (24) sealing the plug body against access thereto from outside the cap (24).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a sealing plug, for example for sealing a hole in a wall of a fluid container. More specifically, the plug can be inserted into the hole and secured therein by accessing only from the outside of the wall (eg, the side not containing the fluid). Background technique [0002] Plugs are known that are radially expandable to fit the surface of the bore, such as that described in GB 2381301 B and commercially available under the name AVSEAL II (AVSEAL is a registered trade mark). [0003] In order for the plug body to fully expand in a ductile manner in the radial direction and reach a specific range of axial deformation (as described in GB 2381301B), the plug body must be made of a sufficiently soft material (such as aluminum). However, it has the disadvantage of limiting the range of fluids that can be contained in the container when its walls have been so sealed, since the material of the plug body will be chemically att...
