Problems solved by technology

In this configuration, the device is subject to the failure of a single AC source
Additionally, additional components may require rack space that can be extremely expensive
Finally, additional components may increase the number of cords (e.g., network cables, power cables, etc.), which may significantly reduce airflow in the rack, thereby reducing the overall maximum achievable deployment density and increasing energy cost

Abstract

An automatic transfer switch (60) for automatically switching an electrical load between two power sources that includes a switch module (64) containing circuitry to facilitate the switching function, and having two attached input cables (61,62) and one attached output receptacle (67). The switch module (64) may be mounted directly on or adjacent to the back of a piece of rack-mounted equipment, thereby minimizing the probability of a power failure between the switch (60) and the equipment. The switch (60) is relatively small, requires no mounting space within a rack, and requires minimal cordlengths.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is based on 35 U.S.C. 119 claiming the benefit of priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 60 / 894,842, filed March 14, 2007, entitled "Automatic Transfer Switch Module," the contents of which are hereby incorporated as if fully same statement. Background technique [0003] Electronic data processing (EDP) equipment, such as servers, storage devices, etc., are typically coupled to alternating current (AC) power in a data center and require very high reliability. For this reason, the device is typically coupled to one or more uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). When supplying redundant power supplies (eg, A and B power supplies) in a data center, a data center administrator must manage the supply and capacity requirements of the two power supplies. Supply must be made such that if either of the two power sources fails, the remaining power source has sufficient power capacity to carry the full load ...
