The method comprises the following steps of: presetting configuration modification conditions, wherein the configuration modification conditions comprise the PHY (Physical Layer) state of a port, configuration function items and the corresponding relationship of configuration options of the Ethernet switch; setting the PHY state of the port of the Ethernet switch according to the preset configuration modification conditions; detecting the PHY state of the port of the Ethernet switch per se and judging whether the detected PHY state of the port satisfies the preset configuration modification conditions, by the Ethernet switch; and modifying configurations of the configuration function items in the configuration modification conditions into the configuration options in the configuration modification conditions if the PHY state of the port satisfies the preset configuration modification conditions. In the invention, the configurations of the Ethernet switch can be modified without the help of a computer.
