Embodiment

[0054] Table 2 shows the ingredients for the preparation of the coated reinforcing biofibres and the WPC of the invention.

[0055]

[0056] Mix the pre-dried wood fibers into the plastisol as follows:

[0057] The plastisol was added to the pre-dried wood fibers in a laboratory-scale Henschel mixer and mixed at 700 rpm using a 3-blade disperser equipped with 21 cm diameter blades. The batch was complete after mixing the liquid ingredients for 3-5 minutes at ambient temperature. There was some heat in the mixer due to shear mixing, but when mixing was complete, the coated reinforcing fibers were not. The resulting coated reinforcing biofibers were non-agglomerated, retaining the overall yellowish appearance of the wood fibers themselves. Strikingly, the biofibers were only coated on the outer surface without being penetrated by the plastisol, as figure 1 As shown, this figure is a cross-sectional photo of the coated reinforced biofiber of Example 2 at a resolution of 400...

Abstract

Coated reinforcing biofiber for thermoplastic articles is disclosed. The coating on the biofiber comprises a plastisol. The coated reinforcing biofiber can be used in thermoplastic compounds to simulate the appearance of natural wood while adding significantly increased flexural modulus for the wood plastic composite (WPC).

Description

[0001] priority statement [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 308,165, Attorney Docket No. 12010004, filed February 25, 2010, which is hereby incorporated by reference. field of invention [0003] The present invention relates to the use of plastisols to coat biofibres for plastic articles. technical background [0004] Plastics have replaced other materials in many industries. In the packaging industry, plastic replaces glass to minimize breakage, reduce weight, and reduce the energy consumed in manufacturing and shipping. In other industries, plastics replace metals to minimize corrosion, reduce weight, and provide color-in-bulk products. A whole industry known as "wood polymer composite" (WPC) has recently emerged. [0005] Wood-plastic composites are based on the premise that the use of biofibers such as wood fibers and other naturally occurring particles as additives to thermoplastic compounds mimics the appear...
