Embodiment Construction

[0020] Reference will now be made in detail to the preferred embodiments of the present disclosure, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Where possible, the same reference numerals will be used to refer to the same elements or parts.

[0021] The ferrules, connectors and / or cable assemblies described herein are suitable for making optical and / or electrical connections to various devices. The concepts of the present disclosure advantageously allow simple, fast and economical connection and disconnection of fiber optic ferrules for a relatively large number of mating cycles. Reference will now be made in detail to the preferred embodiments, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Where possible, the same reference numerals will be used to refer to the same elements or parts.

Abstract

Disclosed are fiber optic ferrules (10, 20) having complementary mating geometries suitable for making optical connections, and fiber optic connectors and cable assemblies using the fiber optic ferrules. In one embodiment, a fiber optic ferrule (10) includes a body (12) having a plurality of optical pathways (14) and a mating geometry included in the body of the fiber optic ferrule At least one notch (15) is integrally formed. The notch of the ferrule allows for a relatively high number of mating / unmating cycles without excessive wear and debris, making the notch of the ferrule suitable for use in consumer electronics devices and the like. The present disclosure is also directed to fiber optic splices and cable assemblies using ferrules.

Description

[0001] priority [0002] This application claims priority under the Patents Act to U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 369,371, filed July 30, 2010, the contents of which are relied upon and are incorporated by reference in their entirety incorporated into this article. technical field [0003] The present disclosure is directed to fiber optic ferrules and related fiber optic connectors. More specifically, the present application is directed to fiber optic ferrules having complementary mating geometries and fiber optic splices using said fiber optic ferrules. Background technique [0004] Fiber optics are increasingly used in a variety of applications including, but not limited to, broadband voice, video, and data transmission. As consumer devices are increasingly using more bandwidth, connectors for such devices will likely favor optical connections over electrical connections for the increased bandwidth. Generally, conventional fiber optic splices used in telecommunicat...
