Embodiment Construction

[0020] Turning now to the attached drawings, image 3 Illustrated is a training adapter system 20 constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention. For purposes of the subsequent discussion, defibrillator 10 is configured as an AED, and is designed to have a small physical size, light weight, and relatively simple user interface to enable users who do not have a high level of training and would otherwise rarely use the defibrillator 10 people to operate. Although embodiments of the invention are described with respect to application in an AED, other embodiments include application in different types of defibrillators, for example, manual defibrillators as well as paramedic or clinical defibrillators. All types are characterized in that none has its own internal training mode of operation.

[0021] The system also includes a training adapter 28 that connects to standard electrode connectors on the defibrillator 10 . A universal connector including an ele...

Abstract

A training adapter (28) for an automated external defibrillator (AED) (10) which provides for safe training use of any AED. The training adapter includes a circuit which ensures that any defibrillation voltage/current is shunted away from the trainee, training electrodes(26), and patient simulation equipment. The training adapter simultaneously provides to the AED a simulated patient ECG signal which causes the AED to operate as if an actual cardiac rescue were occurring, thus heightening the realism of the training experience.

Description

technical field [0001] Aspects of the invention relate generally to external defibrillator training, and more particularly to devices that allow training in the safe use of external defibrillators and methods of training users to operate external defibrillators. Background technique [0002] Abnormal heart activity, such as ventricular fibrillation, can be returned to normal sinus rhythm by applying electrical current to the heart using an external defibrillator. In cardiac arrest, the patient suffers a life-threatening interruption of the normal cardiac rhythm, usually in the form of VF or VT without spontaneous circulation (ie, shockable VT). In VF, the normal rhythmic ventricular contractions are replaced by rapid irregular spasms, resulting in inefficient or severely reduced cardiac pumping. If the normal rhythm is not restored within what is usually considered to be about 8 to 10 minutes, the patient dies. Conversely, the sooner circulation can be restored (via CPR an...
