Embodiment Construction

[0019] The present invention overcomes the problems associated with any of the various types of sound isolating earphones by providing an ambient sound monitoring system that allows the user to be aware of selected sounds in their environment without the earphones to hear the sound. As used herein, the term "headphone" refers to any of a variety of well-known hearing devices that can be used, for example, to reproduce music or other auditory programming, such devices include but are not limited to earbuds, earphones, in-ear monitors headphones, headsets / earphones, earphones / earphones, clip-on receivers / earphones, and behind-the-neck receivers / earphones. Additionally, as further described below, the present invention may also be used with sound attenuating earphones and earbuds, regardless of whether the sound attenuation is due to passive, active, or a combination of passive and active noise cancellation.

Abstract

A system and method for interjecting ambient background sounds into a set of headphones is provided. The system monitors an ambient sound environment and compares the ambient sound environment to a preset set of sound characteristics (e.g., frequency signatures, amplitudes and durations) in order to detect important or critical background sounds (e.g., alarm, horn, directed vocal communications, crying baby, doorbell, telephone, etc.). When a critical background sound is detected, the system interjects either a notification signal or a portion of the ambient background into the audio stream, thus alerting a user of a potentially important sound or event occurring within their immediate vicinity.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to audio equipment, and more particularly to systems for use with headphones. Background technique [0002] People are exposed to a variety of noises of varying magnitudes every day, and these noise sources affect the quality of life in many ways: from simple annoyance to noise-induced fatigue and even hearing loss. Common noise sources include those associated with traveling (e.g., subway trains, motorcycles, aircraft engines, wind noise, etc.) and those associated with one's occupation (e.g., factory equipment, chainsaws, lawn trimmers, hedge trimmers, etc.). [0003] To help mitigate background noise while providing a source of entertainment, many people listen to music or other audio programming through a pair of headphones. Unfortunately, the use of headphones can also be problematic if the user cannot hear the various auditory cues and warnings that the user typically relies on in their everyday lives (e....
