Abstract

The present invention provides a method for "but reasoning" using an inconsistent knowledge base. This method not only gives the answer to the Boolean question, but also gives additional and instructive information. The method first looks for bridge statements that explain the inconsistencies between the answers and the inconsistent knowledge base. The method then selects the but statement that results in a contradiction to the answer, and constructs and validates a but answer with the answer, the but statement, and optionally the bridge statement.
