[0013] Facilitates the audio portion of the communication during a two-party or multi-party phone call or multimedia session if the parties experience degraded audio transmission quality. This result can be achieved by determining the characteristics of the speech at the near end where the speech is spoken and determining the same characteristics of the same speech at the far end where the speech is delivered to the listener. A comparison of the speech characteristics determined at each end can then be made. If the comparison fails a predetermined quality metric (typically a metric determined to indicate unacceptably reduced intelligibility), all parties in the call may be notified. Alternatively, only the speaker is notified of the question. This enables the speaker to take action to correct or compensate for the problem, for example by speaking more slowly or repeating the last utterance the speaker was notified to be incomprehensible.
