Embodiment Construction

[0013] The following descriptions relate to better solutions for engine systems such as figure 1 A system and method for spark plug fouling in an engine system in . The engine controller may be configured to execute a control routine, such as figure 2 procedure in ) to adjust the engine's EGR schedule so that the spark plug tip temperature is maintained elevated and soot accumulated on fouled spark plugs is burned off. When the engine is the green engine of the vehicle at the assembly plant (such as image 3 shown) or non-green engines of vehicles that have left the assembly plant (such as Figure 4 shown), the EGR adjustment performed can vary.

[0014] figure 1 is a schematic diagram showing one cylinder of a multi-cylinder engine 10 that may be included in a propulsion system of an automobile. Engine 10 may be controlled at least partially by a control system including controller 12 and by input from a vehicle operator 130 via an input device 132 . In this example, i...

Abstract

The invention relates to a method and system for ignition control. Methods and systems are provided for addressing spark plug soot fouling. In one example, spark plug tip temperatures are raised and maintained elevated by advancing spark timing and increasing engine speed, while reducing an amount of EGR being delivered to the engine. The spark plug fouling mitigating actions are adjusted based on whether the engine is in a green condition at an assembly plant or not.

Description

technical field [0001] The present description generally relates to methods and systems for controlling a vehicle engine to address spark plug fouling. Background technique [0002] An engine ignition system may include a spark plug for delivering electrical current to a combustion chamber of a spark ignition engine to ignite the air-fuel mixture and initiate combustion. Depending on engine operating conditions, spark plug fouling can occur when the firing tip of the spark plug insulator becomes covered with foreign matter (eg, fuel, oil, or soot). Once fouled, the spark plugs may not be able to provide sufficient voltage to trigger cylinder combustion until the spark plugs are sufficiently cleaned or replaced. For example, spark plugs may be cleaned by operating the engine under speed-load conditions that raise the temperature of the plug tip sufficiently to burn off soot accumulated on a fouled spark plug. [0003] One example method for spark plug cleaning is shown by G...
